The standard
What a listing must say
Most bad calls trace back to a vague posting. A church writes three paragraphs of warm language, a candidate reads what he hopes it means, and two years later both parties are grieved. We ask for the plain facts before a listing goes live.
- Say what the church believes
The confession or statement of faith, the denomination or association if there is one, and the convictions a candidate will be asked to hold without crossing his fingers.
- Say who the role answers to
Elders, a senior minister, a personnel committee, a congregational vote. A candidate who learns the authority structure after he arrives has already been treated poorly.
- Say what it pays
A range in dollars, whether housing or a parsonage is included, what happens with health coverage, and whether moving costs are covered. Silence here wastes months for everyone.
- Say what the week looks like
Hours in study, hours in visitation, meetings, funerals, and whether the role is bivocational. Name the parts that are hard. The right man will not be scared off by honest work.
For candidates
Before you candidate
A call to a congregation is a call to a place: its cemetery, its school board, its shuttered factory, its long memory of the last three ministers. Visit on an ordinary Sunday before you visit as a candidate. Ask to see the budget. Ask why the previous man left, and ask a member rather than only the search committee.
Bring your wife into the conversation early and take her questions seriously. Ask about the housing market, the schools, and the drive to the nearest hospital. A family that cannot live in a town will not stay long enough to shepherd it. Then pray, and let your current elders counsel you.
